Junior Designer at Vixen Labs

My time at Vixen Labs “The Conversational AI Agency”
During my Time I worked on Alexa Themes, created it’s video branding, social media, blog images and client-facing presentations.

Alexa Themes

Vixen Labs was asked by Amazon to produce Themes for Alexa.
These are experiences which use visuals and audio to give unique twists on Alexa using your favourite brands or topics.
I got to work on themes such as:

  • Avatar: The Way of the Water

  • The Super Mario Bros. Movie

  • Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

My main role in all this was visual curation. In most cases, the brand would send us a press kit of images and it was my job to go through and find not only which were the most appealing images to use, but also make sure it would work across the Alexa devices. There were a lot of factors to keep in mind like where UI would be on top of images but also making sure it contrasts with the UI which we could not alter.

In efforts to help me better adhere to this I actually created a toolset in Figma using components which allowed me to preview an image as a background across the Alexa devices. This was one of my first times properly using Figma components and it actually gave me a lot of satisfaction as it was a huge timesaver and came in handy for all future projects. Previously we had just had to mockup each image onto each device one by one and this automation helped greatly.

Getting to work on the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse theme was a dream come true for me. The first film was already one of my favourite movies of all time and to get to work with the material of it’s sequel was an amazing experience. It’s breathtaking and unique visuals were a joy to work with and for the first time we actually ended up with too many images to choose from as each individual frame was just a work of art.
I’m incredibly happy with the way it turned out, the whole team worked to write hilarious voice lines and incredible audio queues to make it a next level experience.

Brand Guardian

I was given the task of bringing Vixen Labs’ brand in line. The branding for the company itself was already fantastic but it was my job to make sure it was consistent across all mediums such as the website, social media and documents.
It was also my job to create blog post images for the company’s frequent posts on their insights, case studies, news and more.

Whenever VL had to give large presentations to external clients it was often my job to make sure it was both functional and visibly pleasing. Plus each one had to not only follow our standards but also meet the criteria of the client.

Finally, I was given the task of giving the Vixen Labs brand a video footing. This meant creating a full package of on brand elements that worked in a video setting across multiple platforms, aspect ratios and categories. Involved was the creation of live video overlays, vertical video overlays, thumbnails and endscreens.

The Last Word

Working with the team at Vixen Labs was an incredible experience I won’t forget. It sounds cheesy but honestly the reason the company has come so far is the people. There wasn’t one person I didn’t get along with and I’ve had some unforgettable moments. I’ll always be thankful for that. This was my first role full time role in the industry and I feel it’s massively helped me grow as a designer. With all that said, I’m excited for what’s next with the tools I’ve been given.
